Stay safe on the slopes - Skiarmadillo

Every year we welcome hundreds of nervous skiers, unsure of how their first experience will go. If you’ve never even tried on a pair of skis before, here are a few top tips for how to make the most of your first time on the slopes, and how to avoid disaster.

Dress to impress

Your body temperature will change drastically throughout your day, which can increase the chances of you catching a cold or flu, so layer up to cover both ends of the spectrum. Making sure your hydrated and eating right is also vital – take a look at our healthy checklist for more information on preparing your body for a day on the slopes. And don’t forget to wear a helmet!

Know your limits

There will always be someone more confident, experienced and faster than you – but they were in the same position as you at one point, so don’t be put off if your first trip up the ski lift doesn’t quite go according to plan. Enjoy yourself and don’t push yourself too much.

Leave your pride in the chalet

The chances are you’ll spend half your time on the slopes trying to get back on your feet. It’s all part of the learning curve, and all part of the fun. The most important thing to do though, if you feel yourself falling, is not to fight it – this could lead to injury, rather than just embarrassment. And don’t ignore even the smallest of injuries. If you bang your head – get yourself examined. Even the smallest knock can have a big impact, with some having serious delayed effects.

Finally, don’t ski alone, don’t ski when you’ve had a drink or two, don’t get too ahead of yourself – and most of all, enjoy yourself!
